Koyomi Araragi discovers that his buddy and rescuer, Tsubasa Hanekawa, has been acting strangely since surviving a vampire assault. When he runs into her on his way to the bookshop and notices she has a bandage on her face, he knows something is wrong. Araragi wishes to assist her, but Hanekawa assures him that her wound is something she suffered at home and that he should not be concerned. When a white cat with no tail is killed by an automobile, the couple burys the creature, and the real difficulty begins. When Araragi later visits his buddy Meme Oshino and recalls the events of the day, he learns what they have buried.
