Daisuke Higashida is a serious first-year Higashizaka High School student. He has a tranquil everyday existence, despite the fact that he is dissatisfied with his family, who does not laugh and exhausts him. His father's firm, however, falls bankrupt one day, and he is unable to pay his allowances, telephone bills, or train tickets. When his father compels him to work part-time, Daisuke chooses to labor at a local family restaurant to avoid cycling 15 kilometers to school.
